One of our favorite summer jazz concert series, the Stanford Jazz Festival, kicks off its 38th season on Friday, June 26 with a stellar line-up of legendary jazz masters and "rising stars" of today's jazz scene.

Known for the intimacy of its venues and welcoming atmosphere, the Festival will feature more than 100 artists with a total of 33 concerts over a six-week span.

Highlights of the 2009 season include the festival's kick-off concert featuring saxophonist James Moody with special guest, pianist Benny Green; jazz violinist Regina Carter; Brazilian guitarist Paulo Bellanati with Carlos Oliveira and Harvey Wainapel; perennial Stanford Jazz icons The Heath Brothers; Wesla Whitfield with the Mike Greensill Trio; the Generations Jazz Project; and Cuban jazz pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba.

Also on the bill for this year's festival concert series: Madeline Eastman with Terell Stafford, pianist Taylor Eigsti and Free Agency, Matt Wilson's Sonic Garden, the Donald Harrison 3D Experience, and "1959 Revisited," featuring pianist/violinist Victor Lin and the Stanford Jazz Workshop Faculty in a musical celebration of one of the most seminal years in the 100+ year history of jazz.
